Springfield Avenue Maplewood--Update on Township Code Enforcement
This fall and ongoing, Maplewood Township is focusing on enforcement of code violations on Springfield Avenue, including visual and signage violations. The Township’s Code Inspectors will be focusing their efforts on the three most recurring issues on the Avenue: 1) unapproved signage and window coverings; 2) improperly secured trash and recycling; and 3) signs and awnings in need of cleaning and repair.
Positively, the Township is most interested in compliance. If there is a condition on your property that violates the Design Ordinance or property maintenance codes, the property owner will first be given a Notice of Violation with an opportunity to correct the condition over a period of time with no fine. You or the property owner can always check in with the Code Inspector if more information or clarification is needed. Only if nothing is done abate the problem, or at least make best efforts to do so, will a Summons be issued to the property owner.
I'm hoping this email will inform you of potential issues; we’d like our businesses to avoid notices and fines by reminding everyone the code and rules for both Springfield Avenue and the Township. Springfield Avenue's Design Ordinance can be found on SAM's website. The Township code can be found at https://ecode360.com/MA1203
Springfield Avenue Partnership is also ready to work with businesses on:
Explaining the process for getting signage and awnings approved
Arranging bulk power washing for signs and awnings with a group discount (we just completed 10 businesses)
Providing grants for businesses with newly approved signs and awnings (9 businesses received grants last year)
A reminder that your sign and storefront are more than just a business identifier; they are what attract customers into your space, acting like a brand ambassador. A branded, clean, attractive storefront helps you stand out from the crowd and shows what your business is about.
